VOLUNTEER GARDENING PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR - July 2010
The Befriending Service of Alcohol and Drugs Support South West Scotland exists to assist individuals in their recovery from substance misuse by reducing their social isolation. This is done by matching each service user with a trained volunteer befriender to meet the individual on a weekly basis to re-engage in community activities. This can mean shopping, cinema trips or simply coffee and a chat.
From this service a weekly social group has developed to encourage service users to come along and take part in group activities and share experiences and information. This has proved successful.
A number of members from the group with an interest in gardening have sourced a piece of ground in Crossmichael, from DGHP which is in need of development. We have managed to source some funding to purchase tools and equipment and started development of the garden. However, a Volunteer Coordinator is required to facilitate the project. This could be a work placement project for any student with an interest in health and social care or for any individual with some time on their hands and would enjoy the challenge.
